Director of Faith Formation

Department: Parish Ministry
Supervisor: Pastor
Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week)

Purpose and Scope:

The Director of Faith Formation coordinates with the Pastor, staff, and Pastoral Council to develop and implement strategies for all Faith formation efforts and formation of intentional disciples in the parish.  This position will work with the staff and ministries of the parish to re-focus their purpose and efforts into the mission of the Church. The Director of Faith Formation will implement and coordinate all catechesis for children in grade levels K-5, assist with the Faith formation of teens, young adults, families, and older adults, and will oversee all sacramental preparation.


  • Directs and manages all faith formation ministries of the parish (including, but not limited to, RCIA, Children’s Faith Formation, Discovering Christ, Youth Ministry, Bible studies, etc.), ensuring they are in accord with the teaching and mission of the Catholic Church and the parish
  • Coordinates Sacramental preparation for 2nd and 3rd grades
  • Oversees the annual Vacation Bible School program, led by a lay volunteer
  • Recruits, supports, and trains appropriate volunteers and catechists
  • Assists other staff members with their Faith Formation and evangelization efforts for teens, young adults, married couples, families, and older adults.
  • Plans and administers the budget for all Faith formation efforts
  • In conjunction with the clergy, responds to the concerns of Catholics that are inactive or alienated
  • Responds to inquiries from those interested in the Catholic faith
  • Provides for the integration of neophytes into the life of the parish community
  • Serves as a resource for staff and ministry leaders in Faith formation efforts
  • Collaborates with diocesan personnel and staff from other parishes to advance Faith formation efforts in the parish and around the diocese
  • Collaborates with the pastor, staff, and ministries to establish a culture of evangelization, stewardship, and discipleship in the parish
  • Provides opportunities for formation in the foundations of Catholic teaching and practice
  • Provides opportunities for training in apologetics
  • Provides opportunities for formation in Catholic Social Teaching and engagement in the public square
  • Provides opportunities for direct service and outreach to the poor and vulnerable
  • Ensures that the Faith Formation staff and volunteers are up to date on procedures, teachings, etc. from the Church (Vatican, USCCB, and Diocese of Phoenix) in regard to catechesis and evangelization
  • Answers ministry correspondence in a timely manner (emails, letters, telephone calls, etc.)
  • Completes tasks deemed necessary by the Pastor

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Active member of a Roman Catholic parish/faith community in good standing with the Church
  • Willing and able to support the mission of the Church, the Pastor, and the Diocese of Phoenix
  • Possesses strong knowledge of Catholic teaching and practice
  • Exercises independent and competent judgment in making decisions relating to job responsibilities
  • Education: Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to Catholic Theology/Catechesis/Formation/Ministry
  • Experience: Minimum four years’ experience in increasingly responsible ministry positions.
  • Possesses strong communication, administrative, and ministerial skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Possesses excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Maintain standards of confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team

Job Performance:

  • Weekly work schedule consists mostly of Monday – Friday (some weekends and evenings will be required)
  • Maintains strong relationships with pastor, parish staff, ministries, and the parish community
  • Job performance will be assessed annually with the Pastor
